An illustrated edition of the famous Greek pastoral novel featuring thirty-three original engravings by Carlègle (1877–1937). Limited edition of 395 copies; this is one of the 25 numbered copies on antique Japanese paper (no. 27), inscribed to the printer Georges-Emmanuel Lang, containing a double set of engravings, on antique Japanese paper and on Chinese paper.
According to Carteret, this is ‘the artist’s finest illustration’ (Carteret, IV, 242). The text is taken from the authoritative translation by Jacques Amyot (1513–1593), retaining the archaic spelling, with the addition to the first part of the missing passage rediscovered in 1808 by Paul-Louis Courier in a manuscript in Florence.
Our copy is enhanced by an original two-tone graphite drawing signed ‘hommage de E. Carlègle’, depicting a young woman (probably Chloe), seen from behind, bending down to pick flowers.
The copy is in very good condition in a simple Noulhac binding.
