Description
[JOKES]. The Fanfares and Abbadesque Curves of the Roule-Bontemps of Upper and Lower Coquaigne and the surrounding areas. An excellent reprint, limited to just 100 copies on Dutch laid paper, of this anonymous collection of jokes, which has remained in the memory of bibliophiles for having, by association, lent its name to the so-called ‘à la fanfare’ bindings. Paris, Jules Gay, 1863. Small 12mo, Bradel binding in brown and pink marbled paper, smooth spine with a title label in fawn sheepskin, untrimmed. 6 introductory folios numbered a to l, XII–176 pp. A facsimile reprint, printed in a limited edition of just 100 copies on Dutch laid paper, of this ‘rare, singular, and indeed one of the most bizarre books one might ever see ’ (Brunet), first published in Chambéry by Pierre Dufour in 1613. This collection of jokes in prose and verse, whose author remains anonymous, is dedicated to Monsieur Favier, “counsellor to His Highness and his Advocate General at the Sovereign Senate of Savoy”. As an anecdote, a copy of the 1613 edition, bound by Thouvenin at the request of Charles Nodier, caused such a sensation with its compartmentalised decoration, modelled on 16th-century bindings, that the term ‘à la fanfare’, in reference to the work’s title, has since been used in bibliophilia to denote this type of binding. A copy in very fine condition.
