Description
BENJAMIN, René: *Le Printemps tragique*. Corrected proofs. A complete set of proofs, richly annotated and bearing an autograph dedication, of this account of the German invasion in May–June 1940. 17 in-8 quires, each comprising 8 pages and bearing the stamp “Librairie Plon – 5 November 1940 - Fabrication’, title printed in in-12 format and handwritten dedication mounted on heavy paper, the whole bound in a makeshift cover with the title handwritten in green ink on the spine and crossed-out annotations on the front cover. Pages slightly yellowed. Corrected and complete proofs, rich in notes and typographical corrections, of this essay and memoir published by Plon in 1940 in the ‘La Palatine’ collection. René Benjamin (1885–1948), a friend of Charles Maurras, a supporter of Action Française and an ally of Marshal Pétain, recounts his vision of the ‘tragic spring’ of May–June 1940 from his refuge in a village in Touraine, from where he comments on events, from the German advance right up to the Armistice. The dedication, handwritten here, is in memory of his nationalist comrade Thierry de Martel, who took his own life on 14 June 1940. Enclosed: a review of the book published in the literary journal *Le Divan* (2 pp., in-12).
