III and 227 pp. Spine burnished with minor paper loss at the foot, scattered small foxing spots. First French edition. It contains the short stories ‘Eugilde’, ‘Imilda’ and ‘Sister Marguerite’. An Italian writer whose time in France was shaped by the ideas of the Enlightenment and the Revolution, Silvio Pellico (1789–1854) was a leading figure among the patriotic writers who, in the early 19th century, opposed Austrian rule. Arrested, imprisoned and narrowly escaping a death sentence, he recounted his imprisonment in his major work *Mes prisons* (1832), which established him as the embodiment of Italian identity. Paperback copy in fine condition.
