Description
[FORTIA DE PILES, Alphonse de]. A Journey by Two Frenchmen through Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Russia and Poland, undertaken in 1790–1792. First edition of this excellent account of a journey through Eastern Europe undertaken by two royalists fleeing the Revolution. From the library of Pierre-Louis Roederer. Paris, Desenne, 1796. 5 in-8 volumes, each bound in marbled sheepskin, smooth spine decorated with gold fleurons and delicate garlands, red leather title label and black leather volume number label, roulette moulding framing the covers, gold fillet on the edges, guilloché caps, yellow edges. VIII-391, VIII-556, VIII-352, 400 and 299 pp., 4 folding leaves (illustrations). Minor scuffs from handling, rounded corners, a small loss of paper at the top corner of the last leaf (errata), scattered small foxing spots. First edition. This journey through Northern and Eastern Europe was undertaken during the French Revolution by Count Fortia de Piles (1758–1826) in the company of his friend the Chevalier de Boisgelin de Kerdu (1758–1816). Whilst the written material collected belongs to the two ‘emigrated’ royalists, it was Fortia de Piles, a native of Marseille, who, upon his return to France, facilitated this edition and wrote the foreword. Coat-of-arms bookplates on the endpapers belonging to Count Pierre-Louis Roederer (1754–1835), a lawyer and politician from Metz, who popularised the economist Adam Smith in France. A fresh copy in contemporary binding.
