Description
[PANCOUCKE] LACOMBE, Jacques. Encyclopédie méthodique. Mechanical Arts and Crafts, dedicated to and presented to Monsieur Le Noir, Councillor of State, Lieutenant-General of Police, &c. The 8 volumes of text from Panckoucke’s Encyclopédie, bound uniformly. Paris and Liège, Panckoucke and Plomteux, 1782–1791. 8 volumes in quarto, each bound in marbled fawn half-basane with cream vellum corners, smooth spine, panels decorated with double gilt fillets and a gilt fleur-de-lis, red leather title label, volume numbering in gilt letters, edges speckled red. Approximately 800 pages per volume (not collated). Bindings rubbed, mainly at the edges of the covers; early cracks at the joints of volumes 3, 4, 5 and 7. Scattered foxing, a few browned quires. First edition of the Encyclopédie méthodique compiled by Panckoucke. The 8 volumes of text only. Jacques Lacombe (1724–1811), a lawyer and bookseller, and a friend of Voltaire, wrote several articles for the Encyclopédie and contributed to each of the 8 volumes of this edition. Launched by subscription by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke in 1782, the publication of the *Encyclopédie Méthodique*, based on that of Diderot and d’Alembert, spanned nearly half a century and was distinguished by a more efficient thematic classification, bringing together a total of 43 scientific dictionaries. A fine set.
