Description
[NAPOLEON – VOIART, Jacques Philippe]. Atlas: Monuments to the Victories and Conquests of the French. A fine copy of this atlas of monumental and artistic achievements during the Revolutionary period and the Empire, a perfect example of the construction of the Napoleonic legend in the early nineteenth century. S.l. [Paris], s.n. [Panckoucke], s.d. [c. 1820]. Oblong folio, brown glazed half-calf, spine with four false raised bands, horizontal gilt and blind-stamped bands between the raised bands, gilt tools and gilt roulette at head and foot. Unpaginated, approximately 400 pages, numerous plates. Spine rubbed, corners worn, a few foxing spots, title page missing. Published anonymously, this collection of plates depicting the key moments of the Revolutionary period and the Napoleonic era through the sculptural and monumental representations of the time is attributed to Jacques-Phillipe Voïart, a French writer and civil servant, and father of the poet Amable Tastu. The numerous plates were produced by the engraver Charles Normand, based on drawings by Ambroise Tardieu. O’Reilly heraldic bookplate. A fine, fairly fresh copy.
