Guy de Maupassant’s final novel, illustrated with 23 engravings based on works by Henri Royer. A limited edition of 100 copies on vellum; this copy is bound in full red morocco, decorated in the Belle Époque style and signed by Jean Stroobants. S.l. [Paris], Société des Amis du Livre, 1913. Quarto, full red morocco, spine with raised bands highlighted by a dotted gold fillet, panels framed by a double gilt fillet and adorned with a circular frieze featuring floral motifs in the 1900 style, echoed by the same gilt framing motif on the covers, inner red morocco edge band adorned with a floral frieze in the same style, double gilt fillet at the corners, guilloché caps, gilt top edge, untrimmed edges, covers and spine preserved, edged slipcase. Binding signed ‘Stroobants’. 270 pp., one frontispiece and 22 full-page plates. Spines very slightly rubbed, with some slight rubbing also on the slipcase. A fine bibliophile’s edition of Maupassant’s final novel, illustrated with 23 compositions etched and chiselled by Antoine Dézarrois (1864–1939) after Henri Royer (1869–1938). Limited edition of 100 numbered copies on Marais vellum paper; our copy (no. 91) is beautifully bound in full red morocco, signed by Jean Stroobants (1856–1922). A charming illustrated book in excellent condition.
