Large 8vo, English green half-shagreen, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons. 572 pp. Some slight wear and scuffing; a few foxing spots, more noticeable at the beginning and end of the volume. First edition of this Romantic manifesto by Victor Hugo, written during his exile in Guernsey. In his eulogy to the Elizabethan playwright, he sets out his critiques and impressions of the great authors of the nineteenth century, as well as his theories on art, genius, beauty and truth. A very fine copy, in good condition with a very well-preserved period binding.
