Description
REMON, Jean-Pierre and CHATEAUBRIAND, François-René de. La Brière. A large illustrated volume featuring 40 original watercolours painted directly onto paper by Jean-Pierre Rémon, all signed. One of 14 copies on pearlescent Japanese paper, complete with its five additional signed watercolours and enriched with a dedication from the artist and a final composition. Paris, Robert Léger, 1959. Folio, loose-leaf, filled cover, off-white half-vellum slipcase adorned with the title in gold lettering, cloth-bound covers and a matching cloth-edged slipcase. 264 pp., frontispiece, 40 illustrations, including 20 full-page ones. Minor foxing on the inside of the slipcase and on the edges. An impressive bibliophile’s edition illustrated with 40 original watercolours by Jean-Pierre Rémon (born 1928) and hand-signed by him, including a frontispiece and 20 other full-page illustrations. Limited edition of 159 copies; this is one of 18 printed on pearlescent Japanese paper (no. 14), containing five additional watercolours on Arches paper (38.4 x 28.5 cm) presented in a brick-red slipcase. The framed painting (90 x 70 cm) listed in the colophon is missing. Our copy is enhanced on the half-page half-title page by another watercolour, also signed, and a large letter from the artist addressed to ‘Maître Hild’ and dated 24 June 1959. This volume is impressive both for the ease with which the watercolour compositions—painted directly onto paper—are executed and for their sheer abundance. A rare item in very good condition.
