Alfred de Musset’s famous Romantic short story, with the theme of difference delicately illustrated on every page by Hector Giacomelli. A limited edition of 200 copies printed on vellum. Paris, L. Carteret & Co., Successors, 1904. Quarto, half-morocco with caramel-coloured corners, ribbed spine highlighted with a dotted gold fillet, compartments decorated with blackbirds in gilt metal surrounded by palm leaves, ochre morocco title label, gilt fillet along the edges of the covers, gilt top edge, untrimmed, covers and spine preserved, engraved front cover. Binding signed ‘P. Claessens’. 68 pp., half-title page, title page, engraved page borders and several illustrations within the text. Spine very slightly sun-faded, some slight wear from handling. A very fine edition of this touching short story by Alfred de Musset, with the text borders and illustrations entirely engraved by Léon Boisson (1854–1941) after the delightful designs by Hector Giacomelli (1822–1904), all featuring a serpent motif. A single print run of 200 numbered copies on Marais vellum paper in a custom format; this is no. 87. A copy in very good condition and of great sensitivity, in a pleasant binding by Paul-Joseph Claessens. Provenance: - ‘P. R. Méry’ bookplate on the first colour endpaper, depicting a town hall with the motto ‘Information – Publicity – Propaganda’.
