Description
GRANDVILLE. Les Fleurs animées. The most romantic of Grandville’s illustrated works, first edition in its original binding. Paris, Gonet, 1847. 2 tomes in 2 in-4 volumes, each bound in green half-basane edged with a gilt fillet, plain spine decorated lengthwise with a romantic design of gilt arabesques, covers of embossed green paper. Volume I: 262 pp. (Part One); Volume II: 2 unnumbered folios (half-title, title page), pp. 263–364 (Part Two), IV and 63 pp. with 2 plates (Botanique des Dames), IV and pp. 65–132 (Horticulture des Dames and table). In total, two wood-engraved frontispieces, 50 coloured steel plates and 2 black-and-white plates for the *Botanique des Dames*. Spines rubbed, head cap missing on the first volume, foxing. First edition of Grandville’s illustrations engraved by Geoffroy (Carteret’s Illustrated Catalogue, Romantic period, page 286). With *Fleurs animés* (Animated Flowers), a work intended primarily for a female readership, Grandville moves away from satire towards a graceful romanticism and embraces a delicate form of anthropomorphism: Violet, Marshmallow, Café and Chocolat, Narcisse, Myosotis, become the characters in a variety of texts, in keeping with the spirit of the age, written by Taxile Delord (1815–1877), Foelix Comte (1795–1870) and Alphonse Karr (1808–1890) for the introduction and *Botanique des Dames*. Also included, illustrated by Grandville: LA FONTAINE. Fables. (Paris, Garnier, 1855. 4to, in contemporary green half-shagreen, decorated ribbed spine, XXIII and 599 pages, spine rubbed with a tear at the foot, some foxing).
