Description
LARBAUD (Valéry) and CHAS LABORDE. Streets and Faces of Paris. A vibrant ode to 1920s Paris, captured with humour by both the author and the illustrator. A fine first edition, printed in a run of 133 copies, here on Arches vellum in its original slipcase. Paris, Editions de la Roseraie, 1926. Folio, loose-leaf in a publisher’s half-white vellum slipcase with flaps and laces, green cardboard covers with a title vignette on the front cover. 2 ff. n.ch. (fx-t., t., colophon), 16 pp., 20 full-page colour etchings with captions, black vignettes in the text, including one on the etching page. Folder worn, vellum soiled, partial sun-fading on the front cover, tears to the flaps. First edition illustrated with works by Chas-Laborde (1886–1941), including 20 colour etchings. Limited edition of 133 numbered copies; this is one of the 100 printed on Arches vellum (no. 80). An ode to Paris in thirteen amusing descriptions by Valéry Larbaud, labelled from A to M, enhanced by Chas Laborde’s vivid illustrations depicting scenes from various Parisian neighbourhoods, from Ménilmontant to the Champs-Élysées, from a metro platform to a boxing ring. This is the first volume in the famous ‘Rues et visages’ series, fully illustrated by Chas Laborde, which continued with London (1928), Berlin (1930), Moscow (1935) and New York (1950, posthumous). In good condition, clean interior.
