SCHLUMBERGER, Gustave. A Byzantine Emperor of the Tenth Century: Nicephorus Phocas. Paris, Librairie de Firmin-Didot et Cie, 1890. Quarto, red half-shagreen, spine decorated with faux raised bands and panels of fine, broad fleurons and foliage, front cover bearing the gilded coat of arms of the City of Paris with the inscription ‘Prix Municipal d’Excellence’, gilt edges. IV – 779 pp. – 1 unnumbered leaf, 4 chromolithographs, 3 maps and 240 engravings. Some scuffing and signs of wear. A rare illustrated edition devoted to the Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas (912–963–969); this copy is bound with the coat of arms of Paris and complete with its municipal school prize, which (130 x 90 mm) is engraved and dated 1895, awarded to Paul Belmin, a pupil at the boys’ school at 79 Rue d’Alésia (now the Collège Jean Moulin at the same address). A fine copy.
