Paris and Liège, Panckoucke and Plomteux, 1784–1797. 4 volumes in-4, fawn half-basane, smooth spines decorated with gilt fillets, red leather title labels, marbled edges. 2 ff.n.ch., VIII and 783 pp.; 2 ff. n.ch. and 800 pp.; 2 ff. n.ch. and 753 pp., 2 ff. n.ch. and 990 pp., 2 folding engraved plates at the end of the supplement. Bindings rubbed, caps worn on volumes 2 and 4, a small tear at the spine of volume 4, a tear in the margin of the half-title page of volume 1, scattered foxing, a few browned leaves. First edition of the Encyclopédie méthodique compiled by Panckoucke and edited by Louis-Félix Guinement de Kéralio (1731–1793), a military theorist. Launched by subscription by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke in 1782, the publication of the *Encyclopédie méthodique*, based on that of Diderot and d’Alembert, spanned nearly half a century and was distinguished by a more efficient thematic classification, bringing together a total of 43 scientific dictionaries.
