Description
Magnificat in CL Linguas Versum et Propriis Caracteribus redditum et expressum. The Magnificat in 150 languages, set in the appropriate typefaces: a beautiful religious print from the late 19th century, richly decorated in colour and in a very well-preserved binding. Notre-Dame de Lérins Abbey [Cannes, Alpes-Maritimes], Bernardi, 1887. In-4, red half-shagreen decorated with fleurons and gilt fillets, front cover in red percaline illustrated with a gilt design signed A. Souze [Auguste Souze], endpapers and half-titles in embossed paper, gilt edges. Approximately 400 pp. (unpaginated), seven full-page chromolithographs. In Latin. A few very slight signs of wear, a small black stain on the front cover. A magnificent illustrated religious work, this volume reproduces the ‘Magnificat’ in 150 languages from around the world, including several European regional languages as well as medieval versions, notably in French, English and German. It contains seven chromolithographic plates, and each page is adorned, in colour or monochrome, with a decorative border that varies from page to page. The binding, in very good condition, was decorated by Auguste Souze (1829–1900). A very fine work, in a rare state of preservation.
