Madame de Sévigné. Letters from Madame de Sévigné, her family and her friends. With portraits, views and facsimiles. The first critical edition bringing together the correspondence—some of it previously unpublished—of the great 17th-century letter-writer. Paris, J.-J. Blaise, 1818. 10 volumes in-8, each bound in aubergine-coloured glazed half-basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt and silver fillets, title and volume number in gilt letters. 8 portraits, 12 views of castles and 1 view of a chapel, 1 plate of coats of arms and 10 letters reproduced in facsimile. Spines sun-faded, minimal wormholes on the lower joints of 4 volumes, some foxing. First critical edition, complete in 10 volumes. “It contains nearly a hundred unpublished letters and more than three hundred fragments, also unpublished” (Tchemerzine, X, 329). Two further supplementary volumes followed in 1820. Ex-libris stamped ‘Corrard de Breban’. A delightful set.
