First edition of the Encyclopédie méthodique compiled by Panckoucke. Jean-Nicolas Démeunier (1751–1814), a politician and supporter of the Revolution, was one of the leading advocates of the American cause in France. He wrote the entry ‘America’ for the first volume of this edition with the advice of Thomas Jefferson, then ambassador to France and future third President of the United States.
Launched by subscription by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke in 1782, the publication of the Encyclopédie Méthodique, based on that of Diderot and d’Alembert, spanned nearly half a century and was distinguished by a more efficient thematic classification, bringing together a total of 43 scientific dictionaries.
