Paris, Téchener, 1846. 2 grand in-8 volumes, blue cardboard bindings, plain spines with title labels. Minor paper loss to the cardboard binding; a slight tear beginning to form on the spine of volume 1. First edition. A rare copy on large-format paper. Ex-libris bearing the coat of arms of the Marquis Hulst. - CHANTELAUZE, Régis de. Cardinal de Retz and the Hat Affair. A historical study followed by unpublished correspondence from Retz, Mazarin, etc. Paris, Didier et Cie, 1878. 2 volumes, large 8vo, contemporary pine-green half-shagreen, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, untrimmed. XII, 494 and 492 pages, followed by 4 pages of the publisher’s catalogue. Engraved portrait as frontispiece, 2 fold-out facsimiles in the second volume. Minor scuffing from handling, scattered small foxing spots. A fine copy on laid paper, enhanced by an autograph dedication signed by the author to Julia Pingard (1829–1905), head of the secretariat of the Institut de France.
