[PANCKOUCKE] MENTELLE, Edme. Encyclopédie méthodique. Ancient Geography. Paris and Liège: Panckoucke and Plomteux, 1787–1792. 3 volumes in-4, each bound in contemporary half-basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and a red leather title label, marbled edges. 2 ff.n.ch., XVI and 756 pp.; 2 ff.n.ch. and 750 pp.; 2 unnumbered folios and 724 pp. 1 folding plate in the first volume. Bindings rubbed; the third volume is damaged with leather missing from the binding. Scattered foxing. First edition of the Encyclopédie méthodique compiled by Panckoucke. This dictionary was written by Edme Mentelle (1730–1815), professor of geography and history at the École militaire and historiographer to the Count of Artois. Launched by subscription by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke in 1782, the publication of the *Encyclopédie Méthodique*, based on that of Diderot and d’Alembert, spanned nearly half a century and was distinguished by a more efficient thematic classification, comprising a total of 43 scientific dictionaries.
