[MUSIC] MASSENET, Jules. *Sapho*. An opera in five acts based on the novel by Alphonse Daudet. Libretto by Henri Cain and Bernède. Paris, Heugel & Cie, 1897. Folio size, blue half-shagreen with corners edged in a double gilt fillet, spined with raised bands highlighted by dotted gilt fillets, decorated panels, ‘A. Pierné’ in gilt block letters at the foot, front cover preserved with a printed vignette in relief and in colour. 4 unnumbered folios and 227 pages. Binding slightly rubbed, minimal foxing on the edges. First edition. A fine print, embellished with coloured decorations and ornaments. *Sapho* was first performed in Paris, at the Opéra-Comique, in November 1897. A fine copy that belonged to Louise Pierné, wife of the pianist and conductor Gabriel Pierné, who was a pupil of Massenet (bound with her name and bearing a handwritten bookplate ‘L. Pierné’ dated 12 December 1897). Included: - [METIVET – CATULLE MENDÈS]. Les plus jolies chansons du pays de France. Paris, Plon, n.d. [1888] Quarto, green half-shagreen with corners edged in gold fillet, ribbed spine, panels decorated with gilt fleurons, original illustrated front cover preserved. 3 unnumbered folios and 146 pages, colour plates as inserts and numerous illustrations in the text. Binding slightly rubbed. A collection of tender songs selected by Catulle Mendès, set to music by Emmanuel Chabrier and illustrated by Lucien Metivet.
