[MIDDLE EAST] MUNK, Salomon. Palestine. A Geographical, Historical and Archaeological Description. Paris, Firmin Didot Frères, 1856. In-8, purple long-grain morocco-bound sheepskin, smooth spine richly decorated with garlands, florets and small gilded corner florets, covers framed by a gilded plant frieze with, on the front and back covers, a rocaille medallion bearing the motto ‘au mérite’ (front cover) and ‘classe française de Mr. Surenne’ (back cover), gilded edges. 704 pp. – 2 blank folios, text in two columns, 68 engraved plates (unpaginated). Binding slightly faded and rubbed (particularly at the edges and joints) with discolouration at the bottom of the spine; a few plates slightly browned and a few with foxing spots. A rare illustrated edition from the collection of *L’Univers, ou Histoire et Description de tous les Peuples, de leurs religions, mœurs, coutumes*; this volume, devoted to Palestine, is illustrated with 68 engraved plates. Our copy, a school prize awarded to a deserving pupil, is attractively bound in richly decorated purple morocco leather. Labelled and embossed ex-libris from Keele University in England. A delightful copy.
