First edition of the Encyclopédie méthodique compiled by Panckoucke, opening with a historical essay by Rousselot de Surgy, former principal clerk of the Treasury. Complete with the ordinal and annotated table of articles. This section of the Encyclopédie méthodique “deals with the whole range of financial matters in a series of articles arranged in alphabetical order. One cannot undertake the study of the finances of the Ancien Régime without having this methodical collection at one’s disposal.” (Stourm, 23).
Launched by subscription by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke in 1782, the publication of the Encyclopédie Méthodique, based on that of Diderot and d’Alembert, spanned nearly half a century and was distinguished by a more efficient thematic classification, bringing together a total of 43 scholarly dictionaries.
A fine copy.
