ROTH, Dieter. Dieter Roth: Collected Works // Diether Roth: Gesammelte Werke – Volumes 1 and 8. A compilation of volumes 1 and 8 of this remarkable collection reproducing Dieter Roth’s artist’s books. Stuttgart, London and Reykjavik, Hansjörg Mayer, 1976. 4 square in-8 volumes (225x230 mm) in loose sheets, comprising 1 anthracite-coloured ring binder and 1 spiral-bound booklet in a cardboard slipcase (volume 1) and 2 volumes in black/white and red/blue in a white cardboard slipcase (volume 8). Slight wear to the slipcase and the box. A set comprising volumes 1 and 8 of this collection published by Hansjorg Mayer, aimed at reproducing the artist’s books by Dieter Roth (1930–1998), a pioneer of the genre. Volume 1 contains two books reproducing works published in Reykjavik in 1957; volume 8 presents a reconstruction of two variants (A and B) of the portfolios published in 1958–1961 in Reykjavik. Each book takes the form of multi-coloured sheets, filled with a variety of geometric figures and featuring windows through which the patterns on the following sheet can be seen. A fine example of this conceptual and innovative collection, which is not unlike Victor Vasarely’s optical art.
