Large 8vo, green half-paper binding, plain spine, red chagrin title label. XII and 644 pp., 209 vignettes in the text and a fold-out map of Polynesian migrations. Binding rubbed, head cap partially missing, tear in the margin of page 389, a few scattered foxing spots. First edition. It contains eleven studies: fossilised humans, Malays, Papuans, the inhabitants of Polynesia, Melanesia and Tasmania, Maoris, Todas, Finns… The fold-out map of Polynesian migrations drawn by Hale in 1846 is revised here by Quatrefages (1810–1892). Handwritten bookplate on the half-title page, dated 1884. A fine copy.
