Description
[PHYSICS] MAIRAN, Jean-Jacques Dortous de. Dissertation on Ice, or a Physical Explanation of the Formation of Ice and its Various Phenomena.
A partly original edition and the first illustrated edition of this important treatise on the physics of ice.
Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1749.
In-12, full marbled brown calfskin, ribbed spine, panels decorated with small gilt ironwork, blind-stamped fillet framing the covers, gilt roulette on the edges, red-speckled edges.
1 blank folio, XXIX, 384 and XX pp. (table of contents). Engraved frontispiece and 5 engraved plates.
Joints rubbed with early cracks at the top and bottom, cap bands missing, small areas of skin loss on the covers, title label missing, slight water stain in the margins of the table pages and the last plate.
Third edition, substantially expanded and the first to be illustrated with a frontispiece and five separate copper-engraved plates. The preface, in the first edition, reproduces the author’s address to the Academy of Sciences in 1748.
With this ‘dissertation’, Jacques Dortous de Mairan (1678–1771), a physicist and mathematician, was the first to prove that salt accelerates the melting of ice.
In fresh condition, in a contemporary binding.
