Description
UZANNE, Octave. The French Woman of the Century. Fashions – Customs – Practices. A portrait of society women from the Directoire to the early days of the Third Republic: an artistic and sociological study illustrated with 22 colour etchings after Albert Lynch, including 9 full-page plates. One of 100 copies printed on Japon paper, with a suite of plates, preserved in its charming original slipcase. Paris, A. Quantin, 1886. Quarto, paperback, illustrated cover with colour etchings, uncut. Presented in a gold-embossed paper slipcase with large floral motifs, incised with two bands of purple satin forming laces and bearing the title and author’s name in gold lettering on the front cover; the interior is adorned with a Japanese print enhanced with colour. XVI–273 pp., 22 engravings including the engraved title page and 9 full-page plates, 10 colour-illustrated initials and around twenty headpieces and vignettes. The cover is slightly rubbed, with the edges very slightly browned and the spine barely creased. First edition illustrated with 22 colour etchings, including 10 full-page plates based on compositions by Albert Lynch (1860–1950) and engraved by Eugène Gaujean (1850–1900). In this volume, Octave Uzanne (1851–1931) sketches a portrait of the socialites from the Directoire period through to the early days of the Third Republic. In 1910, he published a similar study on the various Parisian women of his time. One of 100 numbered copies on Japanese paper (no. 70), containing a suite also on Japanese paper (a precursor to the 10 full-page compositions). [Vicaire, VII, 924]. A fine copy, preserved in its original Japanese-inspired slipcase.
