Description
[BINDING – LOUIS XV] BELLEGARDE, Jean-Baptiste Morvan de. The Office of Holy Week for use in Rome and Paris. In Latin and French. With an explanation of the Church’s ceremonies, and instructions, prayers and brief reflections on the Mysteries and services celebrated (sic) during this Holy Week. A full garnet morocco binding bearing the coat of arms of Louis XV. Paris, Jacques Collombat, 1732. In-8, full garnet red morocco, ribbed spine decorated with gilded fleurs-de-lis and small interlaced lilies of the same colour, covers embossed with the gilded coat of arms of Louis XV and framed by a gilded frieze alternating fleurs-de-lis and palmettes, gilded roulette with cut-outs and chases, gilded edges. XX – 654 pp. – 1 folio without content – LX – 1 blank folio without content, double frontispiece, 4 copperplate engravings and 4 woodcut headpieces. In French and Latin. Some scuffing and slight discolouration from wear, a small tear in the front cover, the doves on the collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit faded, pages slightly browned, a few foxing spots and rare small tears or missing sections (notably on folio Tjjj). Printed by Jacques Collombat (1668–1744, the King’s chief printer), this *Office de la Semaine Sainte à l’usage de la Maison du Roy* is bound in full garnet morocco bearing the coat of arms of the young Louis XV, who was 22 years old in 1732. It is illustrated with a double frontispiece and four full-page copperplate engravings, as well as four ornamental woodcut headbands opposite them. Written in French and Latin, the text is laid out alternately in one or two columns. The version of the coat of arms appearing on this copy (azure, three gold fleurs-de-lis surmounted by a royal crown and surrounded by the collars of the Order of Saint Michael and the Holy Spirit) from the early reign of ‘the Beloved’ is found in three formats, this one (90 x 60 mm) being the largest. With a handwritten bookplate (legible cursive script, brown ink with golden highlights, the last three letters of the name smudged) on the first white endpaper reading ‘Madame la vicomtesse de Cha[bot?]’ and a bookplate underneath reading ‘m. Labrousse’. A fine and delightful bibliophile’s item. Sources: - Olivier, pl. 2495, plate no. 16
