Description
[BULLFIGHTING] DARAGNÈS, Gabriel – MONTHERLANT, Henry de. *Les Bestiaires*. Bullfighting brought to life by Montherlant’s prose and Daragnès’s illustrations — a rare first edition with a signed print set. Paris, Bernard Grasset, [1938]. 2 vols. in-8 (213 x 155 mm) and in-4 (315 x 243 mm). Red Jansenist morocco, edges gilt on endpapers, red chamois lining and endpapers, double endpapers, original cover preserved, edged slipcase (binding signed L. Lévêque & R. Mondangé). The set bound in half-morocco of the same style. 298 pp.; 6 plates. Spine slightly darkened; front and rear joints rubbed and cracked; slight transfer from the frontispiece onto the title page. A rare illustrated edition, limited to 300 copies, all on vellum. The illustrations comprise six original drypoint engravings by Gabriel Daragnès, including one on the frontispiece. An unnumbered copy on vellum, enhanced with an additional set of the six engravings signed in graphite — as in the first fifty copies. Published in 1926, *Les Bestiaires* is a novel inspired by Montherlant’s passion for bullfighting, which he developed as a teenager during his stays in Spain. It features Alban de Bricoule, confronted with the world of the bullring, caught between fascination, violence and a spiritual quest. Beyond the spectacle, Montherlant sees in it an ancestral rite, a modern sacrifice inherited from the cult of Mithras, in which man, alone in the face of death, celebrates a tragic form of beauty.
