First edition of this translation; our copy bears the stamped bookplate of the explorer Charles-Marie de la Condamine.
Paris, Pierre Aubouyn, 1707.
In-12, orange-brown calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with fine gilt fleurons bordered by smaller fleurons of the same design, gilt roulette on the edges, speckled edges.
1 ff.n.ch. - 356 pp. - 1 f.n.ch.
Creases on the spine, binding rather rubbed, upper cap worn away, joints worn. A few foxing spots and a small loss of paper on the first white endpaper.
A rare first edition of Pierre Hessein’s translation of three short stories by Cervantes (Riconet and Cortadille, The Jealous Man of Extremadura and The Beautiful Egyptian).
Our copy bears the bookplate of the French explorer and navigator Charles-Marie de la Condamine on the title page (azure with three gold leopard heads surrounded by the inscription ‘EX LIB. CAR. MAR. DE LA CONDAMINE”).
It also bears an engraved “Andreæ Granger” bookplate mounted on the front cover.
An interesting literary title featuring the Charles-Marie de la Condamine bookplate.
