CENDRARS, Blaise and HECHT, Joseph. *L'Eubage aux antipodes de l'unité*. First edition of this ‘mythical tale’ by Blaise Cendrars, illustrated by Joseph Hecht. A copy on Imperial Japan paper, enhanced with two sets of illustrations, in a fine signed binding. Paris, Au Sans Pareil, 1926. Large 12mo, midnight blue slipcase, plain spine with gilt title, front cover adorned with a gilt and silver butterfly enhanced with mosaic-style confetti and gilt stars within a silver circle, gilt head edge, covers and spine preserved, edged slipcase. Contemporary binding (1992) by R. Moretti. 91 pp., 5 full-page chiselled engravings, including the frontispiece. Some slight signs of wear. First edition illustrated with 5 engravings in the refined and symbolic style of the Polish painter Joseph Hecht (1891–1951) which illustrates this “mythical tale […] whose writing was punctuated by the cannon rumbling in the depths of the night [which] must also be read as a journey to the heart of the world’s pain” (Jean-Carlo Flückiger, Blaise Cendrars, *L’Eubage*, aux antipodes de l’unité. Paris, Honoré Champion, *Cahiers Blaise Cendrars* no. 2, 1995). Limited edition of 1,100 copies; this is one of 25 numbered copies on Imperial Japan paper (no. 31), enhanced with two plates bound in fine, one on Holland paper and the other on vellum. A copy in excellent condition in a fine signed contemporary binding. Provenance: - Ex-libris embossed ‘bibliothèque Jacques Maillet’ on the half-title page and a label of the same on the second leaf.
