Argentorati [Strasbourg], Jacobi Bannbach, 1789. Sturdy quarto, fawn-coloured marbled calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fleurons, red title label, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, blue marbled edges. Contemporary binding. 4 unnumbered folios [title and preface] – 430 pp. In Latin. Scuffing to the binding, gilding partially worn away, title label added later, corners scuffed, very rare foxing and wormholes on pp. 245 to 294, followed by a worm-eaten passage extending to p. 332. This Strasbourg edition brings together three of Virgil’s poetic collections in a single volume: the Bucolics, the Georgics and the Aeneid. The title page and the preface to the reader are double-bound. Includes a partially faded handwritten bookplate. A fine copy, in its period binding.
