Description
[LOT-ET-GARONNE – NÉRAC] – [BARRIER (André), collector]. A collection of original prints depicting the town of Nérac (Lot-et-Garonne). No place, no publisher, no date. In-8 volume (240 x 170 mm). Aubergine half-percaline binding, plain, unmarked spine. 31 plates mounted on tabs. Some slight foxing. Binding rubbed from use. A precious mock-up album from the library of the great bibliophile André Barrier, bringing together 31 original prints from the 18th and 19th centuries—including 5 in two states—devoted to views, monuments and historical depictions of the town of Nérac, as well as portraits of queens and princesses linked to the town’s history. The engravings were produced using a variety of techniques: burin, etching, intaglio, mezzotint, as well as colour prints using the ‘poupée’ method, resulting in a collection of great graphic richness. The plates are by artists including Lespiault, Dufau, J. de V. and Abel Seignoret. Thirteen prints are taken from *La Guirlande des marguerites. Sonnets dedicated to the town of Nérac* (Bordeaux: Durey, Lefebvre, 1876). Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the album constitutes a fascinating iconographic and historical record of Nérac, the former capital of Albret, closely linked to the figure of Henri de Navarre, the future Henri IV, and to the decisive events of the late 16th century, notably the Conferences of Nérac (1578–1579) and the edict that followed. Provenance: from the library of André Barrier (Paris, 1870–1957), with an etched bookplate. President of the Court of Appeal, President of the Cent Bibliophiles, and a member of several bibliophilic societies.
