Description
[NAPOLEON – LEIPZIG] [BOUTOURLIN, Dimitri]. An account of the autumn campaign of 1813 in Germany, from the breaking of the armistice to the French army’s crossing of the Rhine.
Paris, Bertrand – Magimel, Anselin and Pochard, 1817.
In-8, black half-calf, smooth spine decorated with faux raised bands composed of gilt and blind-stamped fillets, marbled edges.
2 unnumbered folios, XI, 2 unnumbered folios and 200 pages. 1 map and 4 fold-out tables.
Normal wear to the binding, a few foxing spots.
Anonymous edition, ‘by a Russian officer’, of this study on the Battle of Leipzig and its preliminaries. It is in fact the work of Dimitri Petrovich (1763–1829), Count of Bourtoulin, a Russian diplomat and bibliophile, who served as director of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. Revised by Baron Jomini, a Swiss military theorist who served on the general staffs of both Napoleon’s army and the Imperial Russian Army,
this is a first-rate document on the Battle of Leipzig.
A fine copy, in a contemporary binding, complete with the large topographical map of the Leipzig area, partly coloured.
