MATISSE, Henri and ROUVEYRE, André. Apollinaire. A superb, illustrated first edition and a fine tribute to Apollinaire by two friends. One of 300 numbered copies on Arches vellum. Paris, “Raisons d’être”, 1952 quarto, loose-leaf, illustrated cloth-bound cover, illustrated blue slipcase and blue publisher’s case. 86 pp., black aquatint frontispiece, 7 lithographs and 3 linocut initial letters. Normal wear and scuffing to the slipcase. First edition illustrated by Henri Matisse. This touching collaboration is the result of a long and beautiful friendship between the painter and André Rouveyre, who had met in Gustave Moreau’s studio in 1896. Limited edition of 350 copies; this is one of the 300 numbered copies on Arches vellum, each with its own unique number (no. 47). A very fine copy.
