A rare work, written by one of the leading figures in 19th-century French precision watchmaking, featuring a valuable autograph dedication by the author to Rear Admiral de Hell (1783–1864).

In-12 volume (184 x 115 mm). Full olive-green calfskin, plain spine adorned with an elegant design in gilt metalwork, featuring a special anchor motif at the centre, a triple gilt border and cold-stamped palmettes framing the covers, with the ‘H’ for Hell, embossed in gold, at the centre; all edges gilt. Contemporary binding.
307 pp. + 4 plates.
Leather slightly faded and scuffed, with a small tear at the first joint. Foxing, as is often the case.
Second edition, revised and expanded, of this short treatise originally published in 184, illustrated with 4 fold-out plates.
Henri Robert (1795–1874), a talented watchmaker and mechanic, began his career as a journeyman at Breguet, where he perfected his craft before establishing his own workshop in Paris and gaining great renown in the fields of civil and marine timekeeping. The author of several studies, he is best known for his two major works, *Études sur diverses questions d’horlogerie* (1852) and *L’Art de connaître les pendules et les montres* (1841 and 1849).
