Description
[MIDDLE EAST] DUSSAUD, R.; DESCHAMPS, P. and SEYRIG, H. An Illustrated History of Ancient and Medieval Syria. First edition of this illustrated survey, comprising 160 plates depicting the treasures of Syria and Lebanon, published to mark the 1931 Colonial Exhibition. Paris, Geuthner, 1931. Large quarto, ecru half-cloth, plain, unmarked spine. 22 pp. and 160 phototype plates with accompanying captions. Corners worn, slight foxing on the edges. First edition published to mark the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, commissioned by Henri Ponsot, the French High Commissioner in the Levant, with the aim of promoting the archaeological riches of the region, then under French mandate. The introduction provides a concise and valuable summary of the history of Syria from the earliest times to the end of Mamluk rule. The superb plates offer a comprehensive overview of the Syrian and Lebanese heritage: Phoenician temples at Byblos, the palace at Beit ed-din, the sanctuary of Bel at Palmyra, and the Great Mosque of Aleppo (source: French Institute of the Near East). In fine condition.
