BUFFON, Georges-Louis Leclerc de. *General and Particular Natural History*.
25 volumes of the in-12 edition of Buffon’s *Natural History* and its *Supplement*, comprising a total of 347 copperplate plates, the set in its period binding.
Paris, from the Royal Printing Office – published by Panckoucke, 1769–1770.
13 in-12 vols., marbled fawn calfskin, ribbed spines decorated with gilt fleurons and gilt palmettes set within them, gilt fillet at the cuts, red edges.
Uncollated; 204 engraved plates, two maps and one fold-out diagram.
Some scuffing (particularly on the volume numbers), several headbands worn down, a few foxing spots. Title page of vol. XIII missing.
A fine copy of this edition of the Natural History by the Count of Buffon (1707–1788), complete in its 13 vols. and illustrated with 204 full-page copperplate engravings, including two maps and one fold-out diagram. Joseph Bréant produced the vast majority of the plates.
Included are twelve of the fourteen volumes of the *Supplément à l’Histoire Naturelle* (Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1774–1782, 12 vols. in-12, same binding but spine decorated with gilt metalwork depicting spider webs, red edges, uncollated, 141 copperplate engravings and two fold-out maps, some scuffing and a few foxing spots).
Most of the engravings in the Supplement are based on works by Jacques de Sève (1715–1795).
This set, containing a total of 347 plates, of which approximately 340 are zoological, forms part of the vast edition comprising nearly 90 or 71 volumes (depending on whether the volumes devoted to anatomy are included) published by Panckoucke (1736–1798). Whilst birds and cetaceans are not covered here, these 25 volumes comprise the entirety of the section devoted to quadrupeds, grouped under the title ‘Natural History’ (13 vols. out of 13), with its Supplement organised as follows: The Earth and Minerals (4 vols.), Quadrupeds (4 vols. out of 6), Man (2 vols.), The Epochs of Nature (2 vols.).
A delightful collection of natural sciences in its period binding.
