Description
[PANCKOUCKE] MASSON DE MORVILLIERS, Nicolas. Encyclopédie méthodique. Modern Geography. The dictionary of modern geography from the Panckoucke Encyclopaedia, in a plain 19th-century binding added at a later date. Paris and Liège, Panckoucke and Plomteux, 1782–1788. 3 tomes in 4 in-4 volumes, each bound in black half-percale, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, edges speckled black. XIX-776 (continuous pagination in vols. 1 and 2); 2 unnumbered folios and 760; 2 numbered folios and 812 pages. 4 fold-out tables at the end of the last volume. Normal wear and tear to the bindings; some minor foxing, particularly in the first volume. One extra leaf at the beginning of the second volume corresponding to pages 217 and 218 of the first volume. First edition of the *Encyclopédie méthodique* compiled by Panckoucke, a dictionary written by François Robert and Nicolas Masson de Morvilliers, who authored the preliminary discourse. Launched by subscription by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke in 1782, the publication of the *Encyclopédie Méthodique*, based on that of Diderot and d’Alembert, spanned nearly half a century and was distinguished by a more efficient thematic classification, bringing together a total of 43 scientific dictionaries. A fine collection.
