Description
[SOUTH AFRICA]. LE VAILLANT, François. Monsieur Le Vaillant’s Journey into the Interior of Africa, via the Cape of Good Hope, during the years 1783, 1784 and 1785. Atlas. A magnificent atlas comprising 56 plates, engraved in black and in colour, illustrating the African travels of the ornithologist François le Vaillant between 1783 and 1785. Paris, Desray, 1818. Quarto (240x320 mm), paperback, with a brown dust jacket. VIII and 56 plates on heavy paper, including a large map of Africa (1000x700 mm) and 42 intaglio engravings, 13 of which are in double states in colour, some spread across two pages, all mounted on tabs. Spine missing, cover worn, stitches fragile, text block detached up to plate 40. Scattered foxing, more pronounced in the margins. Plates generally well preserved. A new edition of this atlas illustrating the two major accounts of African exploration by the ornithologist and traveller François Le Vaillant (1753–1824). From his travels in the Cape Province of South Africa, the author brought back valuable information on the customs of the Xhosa and Hottentots, as well as rich collections of plants and birds, which were later housed in the Leiden Museum. His books enjoyed great success throughout Europe. Some of the bird names he coined are still in use today, and certain species would later be named after him, such as Levaillant’s cuckoo. The atlas is a comprehensive collection of the plates announced for both voyages, totalling 56 plates, including a large map of Africa and 42 intaglio-engraved plates, 13 of which are in two states, depicting animals, indigenous people and landscapes. Notably, it includes the famous plate of the ‘apron-wearing’ Hottentot woman, which is often missing.
