Description
HUGO, Victor. Les Quatre vents de l'esprit. A fine first edition on heavy paper, a major collection from the Master of Guernsey’s later period. Paris, J. Hetzel, A. Quantin, 1881. 2 in-8 volumes, green half-shagreen, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fleurons. 335 and 325 pages. Spines slightly rubbed, scattered foxing. First edition of this major collection of poetry, complete in two volumes. This monumental work contains the author’s entire literary legacy and is divided into four parts: the satirical book, the dramatic book, the lyric book and the epic book. This copy was printed on large-format paper, giving it a superior quality to the standard edition. According to the bibliographical reference by Vicaire (IV, page 363), only sixty special edition copies were printed on luxury paper: 10 copies on Japon paper (100 fr.), 10 on Whatman paper (80 fr.), 10 on Chine paper (60 fr.) and 30 on Holland paper (40 fr.). Consequently, this could be one of the ten copies on Whatman paper, unmarked. Copy in good condition.
