Description
DORÉ, Gustave and MARY-LAFON, Jean-Bernard. The Adventures of Sir Jaufré and the Fair Brunissende. First edition of the 20 illustrations by Gustave Doré accompanying this Arthurian novel, adapted from the Occitan by the leading linguist of the time on the subject. Paris, Librairie nouvelle, 1856. In-4, red half-chagrin, spine with raised bands richly decorated, red grained percaline covers with embossed border, gilt edges. XV and 139 pp., 20 plates with serpentine borders. Some scuffing to the binding, mainly on the head and foot, with scattered foxing. First print run of the 20 wood-engraved plates based on Gustave Doré’s illustrations. Translated and adapted by Jean-Bernard Mary-Lafon from *Le Roman de Jaufré*, a tale from the Arthurian cycle written in Occitan in the late 12th or early 13th century. Coat-of-arms bookplate on the back cover belonging to Count Godefroy de Montgrand. A fine copy, in a contemporary binding.
