A key reference work on the history of Toulouse, in its first edition and in a contemporary binding. Toulouse, Colomyez & Posuël, 1687–1701. 2 folio volumes, each bound in full marbled brown calfskin, spine richly decorated with raised bands, title label in beige leather and volume number label in green leather, gilt roulette on the cuts, red edges. 18 unnumbered folios, 149, 1 unnumbered folio, 344, 1 unnumbered folio, 128 and 18 unnumbered folios; 4 ff.n.ch., 548, 112, 1 f.n.ch., CCII, 1 f.n.ch., 20 and 21 ff.n.ch. 2 title vignettes, 9 headpieces, 9 initials and 4 tailpieces engraved on copper by Sébastien Le Clerc and Jacques Simonin, as well as 3 headpieces, 4 initials and 58 tailpieces engraved on wood (uncollated). Covers and edges rubbed and worn, particularly on the first volume (wormholes in the margins of pages 271 to 312), some foxing. A fairly rare first edition. [Brunet, III, 742]. Germain de La Faille (1616–1711), historian and writer, served as a capitoul (municipal magistrate) in Toulouse. In his *Annales*, he traces the history of the city from the incorporation of the County of Toulouse into the Crown, and includes a treatise on the nobility of the capitouls, in which he argues that their nobility dates back to Roman times. The first part contains an essay on the gold of Toulouse and an alphabetical list of the capitouls, whilst the second part supplements the first, as well as including important documents concerning the noble and commoner fiefs of the seneschalship of Toulouse and the rest of Languedoc. A fine copy in a contemporary binding.
