Chypre is a fragrance family that has been used in perfumery since ancient times. In the Middle Ages, it appeared in Italy, then in France in the 18th century, often in powder form. However, its definition remained vague until the 19th century.
In 1909, Guerlain launched *Le Chypre de Paris*, followed by *Chypre d’Orsay* in 1912. But it was in 1917, in the midst of the First World War, that François Coty revolutionised the genre with *Le Chypre de Coty*. This modern, structured and innovative fragrance redefined the chypre fragrance family. It marked a turning point by becoming the benchmark for a new line of perfumes, blending tradition with the avant-garde.
