Description
J. D. MAGALON. *Couronne poétique du général Foy*. Published by… Paris, Chaumerot the Younger, 1826. In-8, paperback, printed cover, bookplate on the cover. viij, 268 pp., portrait on the frontispiece. Contains, on pp. 63–71, an ‘Elegiac Poem’ by Alexandre Dumas. This is a reprint of the ‘Elegy on the Death of General Foy’, the first work by Alexandre Dumas to have been published. The death of Maximilien Sébastien Foy (1775–1825), a Major-General who had fought in the wars of the Revolution and the Empire, made a great impression. A Member of Parliament since 1819, he was one of the leading figures of the Liberals in the Chamber. A national fund-raising campaign was launched, and his funeral was attended by a vast crowd led by the Duke of Orléans. With this poem, Dumas repaid a debt of gratitude to General Foy. In 1823, the young man, who could find no way out of the poverty into which he was sinking in his native country, was miraculously introduced to Foy, who secured him a post in the Duke of Orléans’s secretariat, thereby opening the doors of Paris to him. Munro, 1. Handwritten bookplate: ‘Huot, Former Captain of Artillery’. Minor damage to the cover and a few foxing spots.
