The play premiered at the Théâtre de l’Odéon on 30 March 1830, with Mlle George in the role of Christine of Sweden, Lockroy as Monaldeschi and Alexandrine Noblet as Paula.
It is dedicated to the Duke of Orléans.
Dumas was inspired to write this play by a sculpture by Félicie de Fauveau exhibited at the 1827 Salon, depicting Christine, Queen of Sweden, refusing to grant a pardon to her Grand Equerry Monaldeschi. The writing of the play progressed rapidly, but its premiere was delayed, firstly because the Théâtre-Français, having accepted it… shelved it, and secondly because of a suspicious censor who forced Dumas to make a few alterations.
The play, performed just over a month after *Hernani*, gave the public—both opponents and supporters of Romanticism—the chance to clash once again. Frédéric Soulié, who had refused to collaborate with Dumas, joined the Romantic camp, accompanied by 50 labourers whom he led to act as a paid audience. The premiere took place amid such turmoil that it was impossible to tell whether it had been a success or a flop.
Victor Hugo and Alfred de Vigny rallied to the cause and played a major part in the play’s ultimate success.
