Description
Alexandre DUMAS. Signed autograph letter to a duchess. Undated [1830?]. 1 p. in-8 on paper bearing the ‘Weynen’ embossed stamp.
‘I am truly very sorry for all the trouble this matter is causing you, a matter to which, it seems to me, Chazet ought to attach far less importance. I fear that the ill humour this must be causing you may fall upon me, who would certainly have deserved it for having taken charge of this negotiation on your behalf.”
The date of 1830 is likely, given in particular the very neat handwriting – it is known that Dumas had been employed in the offices of the Duke of Orléans because of his fine handwriting – as well as the Weynen paper, which was very much in vogue in the very early 1830s.
Could the duchess in question be the Duchess of Orléans, Marie-Amélie, the future Queen of the French?
