Description
(Alexandre DUMAS) – Gal DERMONCOURT. *La Vendée et Madame*. Paris: Adolphe Guyot, Urbain Canel, 1833. In-8, green half-calf, plain spine with ornamentation and gilding, speckled edges. [2 ff.], IV, 362 pp., [1 f.], frontispiece engraving, scattered foxing. First edition. Although his name does not appear, this work was written entirely by Alexandre Dumas based on the notes of General Dermoncourt (1771–1847). Dermoncourt, who took part in all the campaigns of the Revolution and the Empire, was placed on half-pay following the return of the Bourbons and then retired in 1821. It was to him alone that the Duchess of Berry agreed to go on 7 November 1832, an episode recounted in this work. Enclosed: The same. Second genuine edition, revised, corrected and substantially expanded, based on authentic notes provided to the author since the first edition. Paris, Hivert, 1834. In-8, half-shagreen with ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets, mottled edges, foxing. 460 pp., lithograph as frontispiece, Dermoncourt’s signature on the reverse of the half-title page. Munro, 37 for both editions.
