In-8, green percaline, gilt floral decoration on the spine, title label in red morocco, two bookplates. [2 ff.], 202 pp., [1 f.]. First edition. This play, one of Dumas’s most famous, is dedicated to Mlle Mars, who played the title role at its premiere at the Théâtre-Français on 2 April 1839. It is the first of many works that Dumas devoted to the Regency and the reign of Louis XV. It is set in 1726. The Duke of Richelieu, a notorious womaniser, makes a bet with the Chevalier d’Aubigny that he will seduce the first woman he sees within a single day.
