The first purely political newspaper founded by Dumas
Alexandre DUMAS. *Le Mois*. A monthly historical and political summary of all events, day by day, hour by hour, written entirely by Alexandre Dumas. Paris, Printed by E. and V. Penaud Frères, 1848–1849.
24 issues out of 26 (from 1 March 1848 to 1 December 1849; issues 25 and 26 were published in 1850), in-8. Year 1848, paperback, printed cover; Year 1849 in instalments.
384 pp., 384 pp.
Taking advantage of the freedom of the press established by the provisional government, Dumas, whilst contributing to various newspapers, created his own publication, which he edited single-handedly.
In it, he offers a retrospective overview of events both in France and abroad before, during and after 24 February 1848. The account of the revolution fills the first two issues (March and April).
The venture was intended to be original, as Dumas aimed to produce at once a chronicle of the revolution, a history of the present day and a reflection on current political and social affairs. To this end, he reprinted articles published elsewhere, transcribed official documents or extracts from other newspapers, and recounted what he witnessed in Paris…
The newspaper’s moderate tone reflects Dumas’s political commitment at this stage of his life, characterised by liberal republicanism and a campaign in favour of a Europe of nations.
